Southwest Michigan Tuberculosis Sanatorium

I "discovered" this site when I lived in Kalamazoo during the mid-1990s. I was intrigued because it was a abandoned modern-style institutional building situated in the middle of an older residential neighborhood.

The building opened in 1954 as a Tuberculosis Sanatorium. It was turned into a Mental Health facility in 1970, and eventually closed in the late 1980's. Despite several potential plans for reuse, nothing has yet happened with this building.

The entire site was fenced off sometime between 1997 and 2002, when these photos were taken.

P.S. Don't climb to the second floor and enter the building. You could set off the silent alarm and get arrested.

  1. Hello to all that are so interested in this building. The building had been a daily site for me as a child from about 1970 to 1984. I grew up on W. North street and as a children my brothers and sisters and I were very interested in this building. I would love to be able to see the inside of this building one day.
